In the summer of 2011, a friend of mine forwarded a Crossfit Groupon to me with the subject line that read, “let’s do this”. Although I was skeptical at first, I jumped on the opportunity to work on my “summer body”, signed up and responded to my friend, “Im nervous, scared and excited….”. Day one—after touring the facility—the coach introduced me to the essential movements and assigned my first workout called BASELINE. This workout consisted of a 500m row, 40 Air Squats, 30 Sit Ups, 20 Push Ups and 10 Pull ups. After completing this workout, I found myself laying on my back exhausted with a feeling of nausea and—weirdly enough—satisfaction. I was HOOKED!
Although I was never an organized sports guy, I felt at home with Crossfit. Matter-of-fact, I also felt like a spokesman and tried to convince any and everyone that would listen to me to try Crossfit just once. For me, while at the box, nothing ever mattered, just the people, the work and the experience and I wanted everyone to feel this joy. In 2012, I was encourage by my current coach to apply for my Crossfit Level 1 certification and decided it would be cool to learn more about the sport. Interestingly, my L1 Coach was Chris Spealler—my crossfit HERO—and I was a complete groupie throughout the entire process. Nevertheless, Speal (Yes, I referred to him by a nickname as if we are besties) spoke to us about our obligation to serve and I knew I was in the right place.
Crossfit has given me another opportunity to lead through service and serve with purpose and I am thankful to be a part of others fitness journey. Amazingly, I am still as nervous, scared and excited as my first day walking into the Box…however, I am now a bodyweight ninja in training and I can lift a little bit now.
